Author Spotlight- Interview with Fiction Writer Andrew McDowell and his Epic Fantasy Novel- Mystical Greenwood

Tell us about yourself and how we can connect with you.

My name is Andrew McDowell. I am an indie author living in Maryland. I’ve written and published fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction, and I’m also interested in writing drama. Anyone interested in learning more about my writing, or my tips on the art of creative writing, can visit my website and blog at andrewmcdowellauthor.com. You can also follow me on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, and Goodreads.

What would you like to promote? (Add links, description, and a photo!)

I would like to promote my epic fantasy novel, Mystical Greenwood.

Description:
Dermot is a fifteen-year-old boy living in the land of Denú who has always longed for something more in life. His life changes when he encounters a gryphon and a mysterious healer. Drawn into a conflict against one determined to subjugate the kingdom, Dermot and his brother Brian are forced to leave their home. A legendary coven must now reunite, for they are Denú’s greatest hope. In the course of meeting unicorns and fighting dragons and men in dark armor, Dermot discovers a deep, sacred magic that exists within every greenwood he crosses through, but his own role in this conflict is greater than he suspects. Can he protect those he loves, or will all that’s good be consumed by darkness?

It is available in paperback, Kindle (and Kindle Unlimited), and Nook.

Amazon | B&N | BAM! | Goodreads

The cover art is also available on Deviant Art. You can buy prints, canvases, mugs, coasters, mousepads, magnets, postcards, and greeting cards.

Finally, anyone interested in also seeing anthologies and literary journals that feature my shorter works can visit my Amazon page (everything there can be found on Goodreads too).

What inspires your writing?

My writing has been inspired by a wide variety of personal interests that I’ve had throughout my
life.

What genre do you write in?

I like to write in different genres because I don’t want to confine myself or be typecast. Some of the anthologies I’ve contributed to were in fantasy and horror. But I hope to dabble some more in those and many others (mystery, science fiction, historical fiction, etc.).

What was your favorite childhood book?

That’s a hard one to answer because I’ve enjoyed a number of books in stories when I was a child. I’ve always loved the stories of Dr. Seuss and Beatrix Potter, as well as those of Reverend Wilbert Awdry (my favorite childhood TV program was indisputably Thomas & Friends). Other titles that stand out from my childhood include Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown and Owl Moon by Jane Yolen. I also always enjoyed reading books about animals; one that particularly stands out was A Whale is Not a Fish & Other Animal Mix-Ups by Melvin Berger.

How did you get started with writing?

I remember that I started writing stories when I was eleven. They were little stories, typically one page. I shared them with friends and teachers; I fancied myself a writer, but I didn’t take it all that seriously. That all changed when I sat down to write a novel at age thirteen. The more time I spent on it, the more dedicated and passionate I became about it. That was when I was definitely going to be a writer and seek publication.

Do you connect with any of the characters in your book?

I think I do connect with the main character in Mystical Greenwood. I have described Dermot as the Nature lover in me, and like him, I seek purpose in my life.

What is your favorite thing about being a blogger, writer, or author?

What I like the most about being an author is that it gives me a sense of purpose in my life outside of anything that one could possibly consider ordinary or routine. I get to share my passions and outlook through my stories. In being a blogger, I get to share my insights into the writing process and offer tips and advice for others; even those who aren’t writers have told me they have enjoyed getting a window, via my blog, into what it’s like to be a writer.

If you could have superpowers, what would they be?

I would love to have the ability to shapeshift into any animal I wish.

How did you get published?

Mystical Greenwood was published by an independent press called Mockingbird Lane Press. I’d heard about them through an author I met at the Maryland Writers’ Association (of which I’m a member). I queried them, and they were the first to offer me a contract.

What advice do you have for new writers just starting out?

My father gave me this advice once: the important thing to remember is to tell a story and tell it well. Seek to tell a good story first and foremost, and do it for yourself, not because you want to be rich and famous. Believe in yourself and your writing, and don’t give up.

What projects are you working on right now?

I’m working on the sequel to Mystical Greenwood. There are some other writing projects that I’ve worked on it partially, but I’m trying to focus primarily on the sequel right now.

Any other information you would like to include for our readers?

I have Asperger syndrome, which is a high-functioning autism spectrum disorder. It is hard for me to understand slang and vocal tones sometimes. I tend to take things seriously. But that is something I am always trying to work on.

Thank you Andrew for a wonderful interview!

Interview with Author Elizabeth Holland and her new book Christmas at The Vintage Bookshop of Memories

What inspires your writing?

This is a question I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. I write romance and two out of three of my self-published books are cozy romances. During my time at University I studied law and, as you can probably imagine, came across some rather nasty events. I then sought out books that allowed me to escape into a dream-like world where happiness and goodness surrounded me. This has greatly influenced my cozy romances, however, I am eager to step away from this a little and challenge myself.

What is your favorite thing about being a blogger, writer, or author?

Being able to put what’s in my head down on paper. I can talk for days so being able to put that energy into my writing is amazing. There’s no better feeling than stepping away from my writing and knowing that everything that has been buzzing around in my head has been captured in words.

What are you reading right now?

I’ve just finished reading Witch’s Mirror by Eva Alton and it was so good I don’t feel ready to pick up another book. Eva had a wonderful way of weaving beautiful stories filled with details, scenery, brilliant characters, and pure excitement.

What is your favorite comfort food?

Halloumi. If I’m having a bad day then I’ll treat myself to a halloumi and roasted tomato sandwich for lunch.

If you could live in any book what would it be?

I’d pick my own books. The village of Ivy Hatch, which stars in both  The Vintage Bookshop of Memories and Christmas at The Vintage Bookshop of Memories, is my dream village to live in. I love the idea of a close-knit community, quaint cottages, and lots of independent shops. I’ve just finished editing Christmas at The Vintage Bookshop of Memories and I’m really missing having my head inside the village.

What projects are you working on right now?

I’m about to start editing a romantic suspense that I wrote a couple of months ago. It’s very different from my previous books but I’m excited to show people another side to my writing!

Thank you Elizabeth for a wonderful interview!

Author Interview with Tenkara Smart and Her Book She Named Me Wolf

Tell us about yourself and how we can connect with you.

I write under the name of Tenkara Smart, a first name given to me by my husband which in Japanese translates to ‘descends from heaven.’  I love to connect with other readers and writers on Goodreads and Facebook.

What inspires your writing?

I believe that we are all vibrational beings and that our souls travel through many lifetimes.  I was inspired to create fictional books based on these ideas, focusing each novel on how a human, in each incarnation, deals with the struggles that each lifetime can bring.  I was also inspired by stories from my husband’s life as well as others I have known, pulling this all together to create six books in my series, The Many Lives of Wolf.

In book one, She Named Me Wolf, I was inspired to share this story because of the way that Wolf deals with abuse from his alcoholic father.  Wolf’s response and coping mechanisms are special and magical, and I hoped that other people who have been in an abusive situation might connect with Wolf’s story and find inspiration from his inner strength, wisdom, and how his powerful imagination helped him to overcome the odds.

What does success look like to you?

Every time a person says they enjoyed She Named Me Wolf and that they look forward to reading the next book in the series, that is success to me.

What was your favorite childhood book?

I loved the Judy Blume books, especially, “Are you there God?  It’s me, Margaret.”  As a girl going into teenage years, it was impactful to me physically, mentally, and emotionally.  I also loved reading The Chronicles of Narnia and getting lost in the enchanting, magical worlds of Narnia.

How did you get started with writing?

With a degree from San Diego State University in English Literature as well as post-graduate work in creative writing/copywriting, I ended up working for 20+ years in customer service and operations for a major running retailer in the USA.  Eventually, my husband and I agreed that I could quit my job and devote my time to writing.  His work took us from Southern California to Qatar and now to Australia, and I write when I feel inspired, which is at least several times per week.

Have you connected with any characters from books you have read?

Recently, I really connected with Eleanor Oliphant from the book Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.  I didn’t connect with her because I am socially isolated but because of her humorous, candid insights, many of which she had the guts to say outload.  Though I could relate to her thoughts and comments about the world around her, I would never have the guts or the honesty to say them out loud and I admired that about her.  I loved how Eleanor’s ‘mind’ created her reality and it wasn’t until she had a paradigm shift that she really began to live and enjoy life.

How do you come up with plots or characters for your book?

First of all, as crazy as this sounds, I have been living with a ghost for over five years now, and she lets her physical presence be known in my house on a regular basis, so the paranormal part of my novel came easily to me.  Additionally, I have had deep, spiritual experiences with my husband that have revealed to me certain truths, and I am fictionalizing those things I believe in my books, especially about one soul reincarnating through different lifetimes.

What advice do you have for new writers just starting out?

Take the time to find your mentors and experts.  Jumping into a giant ocean of writers, with so many who are excellent at their craft, make it difficult to market your book and get noticed.  Make sure you get help, especially a brilliant cover design and editor, and maybe an agent or publisher to help ensure your wonderful story and writing have the best chance to get discovered!

What projects are you working on right now?

I am working on the second book in my series based on the life of a samurai warrior named Junsaku, planned for release next year.  Also, I am working with a ghostwriter and considering turning my book into a screenplay.  In my opinion, She Named Me Wolf would be an incredibly powerful, on-screen experience especially because of the ghosts and the animals, using live-action screen effects as seen in the new ‘Jungle Book’ or ‘Lion King’.

Any other information you would like to include to our readers?

If you should decide to read She Named Me Wolf, just want to say THANK YOU and I hope that you enjoy this story of friendship, survival, and the power of imagination.

Thank you Tenkara for a great interview!

Interview with Fantasy and Dystopian Author Brooklynn Dean

What does success look like to you?

Success happens, in my opinion, the moment you write something that someone you’ve never met before connects with. It’s really a testament to the nature of humanity and how connected we really are through intangible forces like emotion and thought.

What genre do you write in? If more than one how do you balance them?

I began with writing only magical realism/low fantasy tales. Writing about people didn’t make sense to me without some otherworldly influences. Later, a dystopian tale came which had stemmed from the ever-present idea in my mind that we exist in an illusion of freedom, not in freedom itself.

How did you get started with writing?

I’ve been writing since I was child! I even went through a phase when I was about 12 in which I thought I was a poet. Hehe

Do you connect with any of the characters in your book?

All of them! I don’t think I’ve ever written a character that I wasn’t attached to in some way or another. I think they’re all little souls living inside my body with me.

What are you reading right now?

Currently I’m switching back and forth between The Shining by Stephen King and Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer.

Who are your top three favorite authors?

My top three favorites will always be Anne Rice, Kurt Vonnegut, and Chuck Palahniuk.

What projects are you working on right now?

I’m working on multiple projects. It’s frustrating because I love them all and I feel so drawn to each of them, but I can’t focus on one for too long without missing the others. I have three new standalones plus a sequel to my dystopian novel, 2288, and a sequel to my satire/social commentary book called Amethyst.

Any other information you would like to include to our readers?

I’d love to connect with more readers! I’m on Twitter and Instagram as ladybrooklynn, patreon.com/ladybrooklynn, and Facebook as Brooklynn Dean

Thank you Brooklynn for a great interview!

Interview with Fantasy Fiction Author Anna J Walner

Tell us about yourself and how we can connect with you

I’m a mother first and foremost, and an author second. Although I don’t think I truly stop writing, even if it’s just in my head. I’m active on Social Media. Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. I also have a website that I update regularly. AnnaJWalner.com

What inspires your writing?

I grew up as an introvert. I preferred the company of characters in books to that of other kids. I also struggled with anxiety from a young age. Books were a place for me to lose myself for a while, escaping to worlds that I only wished I could visit. As an author, I get to create those same experiences for others.

What does success look like to you?

I started writing long before I ever had the nerve to put my first series out. But I finished it and published it for my daughter. That’s my success. Writing the Enrovia series, even if it hasn’t done as well as I’d hoped, I still conquered my fear and put it out there.

What genre do you write in? If more than one how do you balance them?

I’ve written in multiple genre’s, but I consider myself to be a fantasy fiction author primarily. I can and have written other things, but my heart always brings me back to fantasy.

Do you connect with any of the characters in your book?

I do. Especially in the Uluru Legacy Series, which will be releasing soon. I drew inspiration for her character from my own experience. I was adopted when I was a baby, knowing only that my biological father was Australian. I took that and built a truly fantastical journey for Amelia. You always wonder when you’re adopted if you’re secretly special. And Amelia most certainly is!

What is your favorite thing about being a blogger, writer, or author?

I love to walk right beside the characters as I write them. I think about what I want to put them through and make it happen. I get to experience what they do when I write. And in a way I’m living vicariously through that process, if only for a few hours a day. When I’m writing, I’m in the story. It’s almost like seeing the movie in my mind and describing it in words. I love it!

If you could have superpowers what would they be?

I really like Amelia’s superpower in Garkain. That would be super useful!

How do you come up with plots or characters for your book?

Daydreaming a lot. I think when I’m doing autonomous things like folding laundry or doing the dishes. Then something, some random action will trigger a thought that triggers another, and I’ve got a whole scene planned.

What is something about yourself most people don’t know?

I was a gymnast until I fractured my ankle. I also took ballet and all forms of dance until then. I can sing opera, but I’m embarrassed to do it in front of people. I have social anxiety and agoraphobia. For one full year I didn’t leave the house.

What advice do you have for new writers just starting out?

Define your vision of success. Start small and write each day. If you never try, you’ll never know. That first book is scary to put out there. But do it anyway.

What projects are you working on right now?

I am currently drafting the second book in The Uluru Legacy Series, which I’m extremely excited about. The new characters, and the surprises. The questions that have to be answered. It’s been a really fun book to work on.

Thank you Anna for a lovely interview!

Author Interview with M.J. Bavis

Tell us about yourself and how we can connect with you.

Hi! Well, I’m M.J. Bavis and I write clean young/new adult novels. I’ve published a duology which would fall somewhere in the contemporary fantasy genre. I also write romance book reviews on my blog (The Romance Quest). I’m Finnish but I currently live in the UK with my husband and two boys. You can find me on Twitter, Insta, and Facebook (@mjbavis), or you can visit my website at www.mjbavis.com. Please do get in touch! 🙂

What genre do you write in?

My published duology is YA contemporary fantasy, but my current work-in-progress is leaning more towards dystopian paranormal. I think my overall style is ‘reality mixed with elements of fantasy with a bit of romance’. Could that be a genre?

What was your favorite childhood book?

I devoured books as a child and had quite a few series that I enjoyed. I don’t actually even remember all of the titles (oopsie), but the three more memorable series were Nummelan Ponitalli by a Finnish author Merja Jalo, the Sue Barton series (in Finnish they were called Helena) by Helen Dore Boylston, and the Katy Did series by Susan Coolidge. Those are the books that really stayed with me!

Do you connect with any of the characters in your book?

Definitely. The characters obviously aren’t me, but there are elements of me in them. At the same time, the characters almost become a part of you—you end up spending so much time with them!

What is your favorite thing about being a blogger, writer, or author?

I’m in charge. Haha. I guess I just love creating and expressing myself through the written word.

If you could have superpowers what would they be?

Uuuuh, the possibilities are endless…. I would love to be able to heal people and have super speed. Also, being able to be invisible would be pretty cool.

What is your favorite comfort food?

Ice cream. Does that class as food…? Or pesto pasta. Loooove pesto pasta with cheese. Simple yet so…comforting.

What do you like to do for fun?

Umm, read? Or write. Doesn’t that make me the life of the party… I do love films and going to the cinema, or binging on Netflix, too. I’m not sure that’s any better, is it? #BoringAlert

What other projects are you working on right now?

I’m super excited about my current book as it’s just so much fun to write, so I’m mainly trying to finish the manuscript. Also, I’m trying to be a little more active on my blog. And then…. who knows? The world is my oyster, right?

Thanks M.J. for such a great interview!

joseph lewis author interview
  •  Taking Lives (August 2014) the prequel to the Lives Trilogy;
  • Stolen Lives (November 2014) Book One of the Lives Trilogy;
  • Shattered Lives (March 2015) Book Two of the Trilogy; and
  • Splintered Lives (November 2015) Book Three of the Trilogy each from True Visions Publications;
  • Caught in a Web (April 2018) from Black Rose Writing, which was a PenCraft Literary Award Winner for Crime Fiction and named “One of the Best Crime Fiction Thrillers of 2018!” by Best Thrillers;
  • Spiral Into Darkness (January 2019) from Black Rose Writing, which was named a Recommended Read by Author’s Favorites. His newest, Betrayed will debut November 2020, also from Black Rose Writing. Born and raised in Wisconsin, Lewis has been happily married to his wife, Kim. Together they have three wonderful children: Wil (deceased July 2014), Hannah, and Emily, and they now reside in Virginia.

What is the name of your blog or book and how did you get started?

My blog is Simple Thoughts From A Complicated Mind, Sort Of . . . it is an inspirational blog to bring hope and help folks consider choices and decisions, attitudes, and beliefs. I began, I think, in 2013 or so.

What is your favorite food?

I would kill for cookies and donuts. Oh, but I suspect you want “real” food. Hmm, anything Italian, but I make a great chili.

What foods do you crave all the time?

Cookies. All kinds.

What is your favorite thing about being a blogger, writer, or author?

To be able to connect with readers. I have wonderful conversations at book sales and signings with readers. I get nice comments on my blog- not so much in the comment section as I do on the Facebook pages or through email.

What advice do you have for new writers just starting out?

Don’t quit reading. To me, reading is to writing as weight training is to athletics. You can’t do one well without the other. Secondly, develop a thick skin because not everyone will like or love what you write.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love being with my family. I love movies and music.

What helps you to stay motivated and keep writing?

The urge. I know that sounds trite, but I enjoy sitting at the keyboard and creating something from nothing.

How do you attract new readers?

Right now, word of mouth seems to be going well. I’ve developed a small but rabid readership. I use groups in Facebook and Twitter.

What has influenced you the most as a writer?

This is a good question. I think my life experiences. My job as a high school administrator and former counselor gives me insight into my adolescent characters. I read in the same genre I write psychological thriller/mystery. I learn and have learned much from Patterson, Sandford, and Baldacci.

What is something about yourself most people don’t know?

I am actually reserved. I force myself to be outgoing. A second thing that I’ve been doing for years is at my high school’s commencement ceremony, instead of giving a principal address, I select a song that means something to me or one that “fits” the class and sing it to them. It becomes their song. Long after the ceremony and for many years after, they remember “their” song.

What kind of music do you like to listen to?

I grew up on Top 40, moved to Rock n Roll, but currently Modern Country. I am eclectic.

Who are your top three favorite authors?

Patterson, Sandford, Baldacci, CJ Box.

Do you have any blogs or books you can recommend?

For the writer, the book on dialogue – Shut Up, He Explained. It is my go to Bible. Stephen King’s On Writing is excellent.

What is your favorite movie that was based on a book?

Kiss The Girls or Along Came A Spider (both Patterson books)

What projects are you working on right now?

I have a new book, Betrayed, that comes out 11-12-20, and while I write, I’m currently writing a follow up tentatively titled Blaze In, Blaze Out. Both are in the psychological thriller/mystery genre.

Thank you Joseph for such a great interview!

Interview with Author and Blogger Derra Sabo

Let us know a little about yourself and how we can connect with you via website, blog, books, and social media sites.

Hi all, my name is Derra Sabo or D. I was born and raised in So Cal and became a writer in my early twenties. When I’m not thinking and typin’ away, I’m spending time with my family, friends, going to the movies, spending days/ nights at the beach, and boppin’ to music. One of my favorite ways to wind down from a busy day or to get together with my family is cooking. Food is an escape, it’s a universal language that everyone understands. I love meeting new people, so if you’d like to connect you can find me on Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat under the handle @derra_nic, or you can find my blog at www.genuinelyderra.com

What is the name of your blog or book and how did you get started?

The title of my latest book is Slumberland. It is a partial collection of the dreams and nightmares I’ve had since I was a youngster. From light and hopefull to dark and twisted. I began writing in Jr. High as a simple way of destressing from school. I have lived my entire life with a rare disorder, Epidermolysis Bullosa, and that led to being teased and bullied throughout school. while my wit and sarcasm are superb, I knew that should the bully fight back with a punch, I’d be a goner. Writing out what I would’ve loved to say to those bullies was very cathartic. Well, that and banging on the drums, lol.

What is your favorite food?

Oh…that’s a tough question. I know that sounds weird, but I am just a total foodie. However, being part German, there is this meatball dish with a different sweet and sour sauce that is absolutely delicious. They are served alongside smoked gouda mashed potatoes. That dish is definitely a labor of love dish, but so worth it. I also love In-N-Out burgers and Mexican food. The Cali diet, lol.

What foods do you crave all the time?

Mac n Cheese….it is my ultimate comfort food. While I love a good homemade mac, oftentimes I am super busy and I will pop in a Stouffers Mac n Cheese in the oven. Lunch or a late night snack…that’s my fav!

What is your favorite comfort food?

I actually made my comfort food tonight…Catalina roast with carrots and mashed potatoes. The carrots slow cook with the roast, so they’re very tender. I plop a spoonful or two of mashed potatoes in a bowl and put the roast and carrots over that. Drizzle with the catalina sauce….comfort in a bowl.

If you could learn how to make any food what would it be?

I would love to learn how to make homemade creme brulee. That is my favorite dessert. I find custards a bit intimidating to whip up.

What is your favorite thing about being a blogger, writer, or author?

Writing allows me to speak my mind, especially on those more sensitive topics. I am not always the best at verbally communicating certain emotions, but hand me a pen or a laptop and out come all the feels.

What advice do you have for new writers just starting out?

Write what you want. Don’t write what is trending or what you think people will want to read. When you write what you have a passion for, it absolutely shows. It also shows when you try to write what you are not passionate about. One last piece of advice…never give up. Writing is 100% a love/ hate relationship. There will be times when the words flow and there will be times when nothing, but stressful blank screens happen. Keep at it because the end result makes it all worth it.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love traveling, going to the beach and spending time with my family and friends. I also love staying in and spending the day watching movies, reading books, playing Animal Crossing, building legos (new hobby during this crazy quarantine) and cooking of course.

What helps you to stay motivated and keep writing?

Having a schedule absolutely helps. Breaking up my day and allotting times for just writing keeps me accountable for writing a certain amount each day. It also helps me from getting burned out, which is easy to do because I start writing and lose complete track of time.

How do you attract new readers?

The one way I found that works in attracting readers is posting the back blurb to upcoming books. That small snippet needs to capture the reader’s attention, entice them to want to read you book. After a few reviews come in I like to attach a few snippets of reviews so that new readers can see what others thought..

What has influenced you the most as a writer?

The one thing that has influenced me in writing is the world…i am constantly finding inspiration to write. From the beautiful aspects to the dark aspects.

What is your favorite genre to read?

I am a big fan of Stephen King…the twisted side of storytelling always captures my mind.

What are you reading right now?

I just finished rereading The Institute by King.

What kind of music do you like to listen to?

I am a total rock/ alternative girl. Fall Out Boy, Blink 182, Green Day… just to name a few However, when writing I listen to hip hop/ rap…a few of my fav artists are Eminen, Postmalone and NF.

If you could have superpowers what would they be?

Teleportation…that way I could travel the world without spending hours at the airport, lol.

What is a typical day of writing look like for you?

Well, the first thing I like doing in the morning is shower and get dressed. This just helps me start the day and prevents me from wanting to lounge around in my pj’s too long, lol. Breakfast and some me time is had, it allows me to fully wake up and have a quiet morning to get ready for the day. I schedule the morning for writing…laptop, cup of coffee and music playing…in the zone I go. After lunch is when I run errands, clean the apartment or do the laundry. I like to keep the night free for comfy clothes and watching a bit of TV, to relax. That is a typical weekday for me. Scheduled out and simple.

What is your favorite movie that was based off a book?

One of my favorite books was Muder on the Orient Express, so when the movie came out I was excited.

What projects are you working on right now?

Living life with a rare disorder doesn’t just affect me, it also affects those around me. So, my next project is my family’s side of what it’s like having someone in their life who has a rare disorder. I am turning the tables in a way.

Any other information you would like to include to our readers?

Be open to multiple genres…reading the unexpected leads to finding a new favorite. This goes for anything in life, hence, Variety is the spice of life. So, keep life spicy lol.
